YEAR OF PRAYER: SECOND SUNDAY OF THE YEAR

The epiphanies carry on... this time at Cana. Here is the first of Jesus’ signs. They reveal to us who Jesus is. What could be seen as a clear reminder of unworthiness and brokenness (water) is transformed into a symbol of rejoicing and presence (wine). Maybe there’s something of a new weddedness that it to take place between God and his people once again... in Jesus. Mary’s presence and, indeed, her ‘instructions’ to the servants give us food for our own prayer: do whatever he tells you. The Lord calls us close to him and as we open ourselves up to him, as we seek to encounter him through prayer, we seek to do his will. Prayer can be an abandonment to the will of God, a letting go so as to let God come flooding into our lives. And as we see from the wine at Cana, God always brings an abundance!
